Modern witches usually venerate, either singly or partnered with a god, a goddess associated with the moon and the natural world. This figure has actually been a major one not just in witchcraft but in the Western imagination throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, making a huge impact on ideas of prehistory as well as on poetry and novels. This talk looks as how and why she came to exercise such power, and some of the difficult political and social choices involved in working with her image.
